EDS 113 Principles and Methods of Assessment, has been an inspiration and a rewarding one for me. Having been completed this course, I was able to acknowledge the different areas of teaching principles and ideas that it has brought into my life, especially in my teaching styles. I was able to recognize my differences specifically in grading my pupils. Honestly, I had a hard time assessing my pupils because of lack of knowledge until I have decided to enroll here. It changes my views about teaching and learning, and how different tools of assessment can be used. It has enlightened me with the topics being studied and have applied in my teaching. Really, I had a hard time to start because I am not good in using computer. But, because I had to do this, eventually I learned a lot. I was able to monitor my own progress especially in my communication skills. A deep understanding on the concepts provided in the course has improved my learning processes. All the topics areas have been meaningful to me and I am enjoying every detailed tasks. Collaborating with my teammates has given me the opportunity to share my views and experiences. Having reflected all the ideas that has inculcated in my mind, it has boost my self-confidence in my teaching, be motivated and developed my teaching styles and strategies. I may say that “the act of teaching is not complete until learning has occurred.” Based on this idea, I have learned that in order to have an effective assessment, the teacher has to know the content on what to be taught, the cognitive level on what to be taught, and how this topics have been perceived by the learners.
Have I been moved into action? I am going to study more, as what I have wanted to do, to enrich myself with the ideas and grab opportunities in order to become a good teacher someday. What mistakes and difficulties that I have encountered in the past, may bring as an inspiration to move-on and be a better person.
I want to thank Teacher Malou for guiding us in the fulfilment of this course. I do not know what words I will say to express my gratitude. To my teammates, Romulo and Ana, a big thanks to both of you for sharing your thoughts and ideas with me. I really appreciate your kindness and perseverance in doing our Asst1 and Asst2.
Assessment is an important element in the curriculum process. Various sources of evidences are necessary for assessment. Such components are goals, measures, experiences, data and interpretation and decision. These are all used before and after instruction and has been made for critical thinking, reasoning, decision making, problem solving, and all that comprises about assessment. Student learners are benefited because of programs, activities, tasks, principles of learning used and is assigned by teacher’s intended learning outcomes.
Learning is a continuing process wherein the student learner has tasks and activities to do and have effective learning outcomes. There are direct and indirect methods of evidences associated with learning that are only implies that learning has occurred, and maybe specific to the student’s own account of learning. Others, provide concrete evidences whether a student can perform and can do specific tasks, exhibits his skills, and demonstrate a good quality in his work.
Sometimes, there are factors or components that tend to be overlooked. One of the components that are overlooked is the inefficiency of teachers in terms of delivering his teaching skills, teaching abilities, concrete programs, and styles of teaching, thus, leads to a difficulty in the learning experiences of the student learner. Student-teacher interaction in class discussion is also important because it will help the student to develop his communication skills, his personality, as well as to uplift a self confidence in what he is doing. Teacher observations are also a form of an ongoing assessment. Teacher’s observation on the student’s behavior is necessary to know whether the student is performing well in classroom activities and the knowledge acquired to solve certain tasks and problems.
Frameworks for assessment of student learning are need to be analyzed, studied, and identified by teachers and educators. With this, teachers and educators can give their full learning abilities and skills to student learning experience. We should always remember that decisions made by educators in the frameworks for assessment of student learners are crucial to their learning experiences, thus, this must be made with accuracy and precision.
The course of study and activity that we had tackled is very essential in regards with my learning experience. The principles and methods of assessment has a big influenced in me now, than as it was before. I am becoming more appreciative and inspired of what I am doing. Assessment in student learning also improve my teaching and learning technique.
Teaching in a pre-school is a big challenge that I am facing everyday. You have to give it all, your heart, understanding and a good communication with the kids. They look up to you and the instructions provided must be as simple as it is, so that they can fully understand the subject. There are many programs that I want to impart with them that I have learned through this course. Being systematic and a deep study about child development will surely come up with a good assessment.

Effective assessment is essential because it includes direct evidence of student learning, on what skills, abilities, knowledge has been achieved, and helping them to self-assess through useful feedback. Through an effective monitoring and evaluating of teaching, there can be a continuous improvement of effectiveness of teaching in school. That is why, I consider effective teaching strategies can be attributed to this. Different strategies like engaging the students in activities that will boost their self-confidence and intelligence are a must. Teachers are accountable to student learning because in teaching them, you are also responsible on what learnings should be perceived. I usually gave exercises after each lesson because through this, I can easily asses them. According to Mckeachie (1999), “What students learn depends as much on your tests as your teaching.” I have done this repeatedly and it is the most effective way of learning. It has strong points because students actively participated and easily remembered what has been tackled and discussed.
Students do not acquired learning by just taking notes, listening to teachers, and memorizing lines given to them. There are many factors that have to be considered in regards about learning. Students need to reflect on what learning should have been learned and how learning is. They need to know what learning has been acquired, how to apply it, and how it was presented. They need to explore, expose, evaluate, and educate themselves. That is how active learning should look into. There should be an interaction made inside the classroom between the student and teacher. It is a learner-centered teaching, wherein student has given opportunity to talk what they are learning, discuss what they know about something, write, and relate it with their own experiences.
In discussing a lesson with my pupils, I gave them specific tasks for them to realize how the learning is all about. I gave exercises and seatwork every after discussion, and interact with them in answering the given seatwork. There is a big impact on them because they strive, and realized how the answer went through.
In this module, I have acquired knowledge in the interpretation of data gathered and make sound decisions about teaching and assessment. It is hard to make decision if the learners involved have almost the same grades. I set criteria in assessing and come up with a good result. Reflecting on what I have impart on them made me realized how important assessment is.
Thinking about what reflective teaching is, made me realized that teaching is not that easy. No amount of money can compensate the hardship that the teacher is experiencing. This is a tough job because the teacher has to learn continuously and shared the gifted ideas from our God Almighty.
As a reflective teacher, I always see to it that everything is alright and had delivered myself well to my pupils. I always reflect and remembers what has happened during the day. I picked up the good things and try to improve myself for all wrongdoings that might happen. Being in the class, sometimes a problem arises and just like others, we have to think carefully of good decisions to make. Focusing on what was happening and dealing with it will begin the process of reflection. Finding sufficient evidence and writing it in a teacher diary is a process of reflection to which the teacher describe, react, and made observation. I find that a peer observation is a better way to reflect upon. I seek the advise and opinion of my colleague whenever I encounter some challenges in my class. I reflect on things to remember the things that had happened, to avoid wrong decision in the future, and continue the good decision that I make.
Having accomplished our Asst1, is another learning experience for me. It was my first time to collaborate with others whom I did not even met in personal. That is really awkward on my part because after so many years, I am here again studying and doing the same old thing . But I may say that this is a different thing.
Engaging and discussing with my teammates helps me to accomplish many things. First, I was able to analyze and investigate what our assignment is all about. In collaborating with my teammates, I have learned to give in and did the best that I can do. I have gained knowledge and I am impressed with my teammates. Before, I really do not know how to start until Ana messaged me. That is the start of our conversation. We had difficulty to start then, but with the help of God, all things became possible. We discussed, we argue (just kidding), but in the end, we came to a better understanding on the subject matter. Indeed, assessment is very essential, not only that we have gained from it, but also by gathering data and evidences, we also explore. It was at the point of finalizing our answer when Romulo, our other teammate came to intervene. Thank you for sharing his ideas. It was nice working with him, and Ana too.
Being in a group is not an easy task. You have to be diligent in your learning, simply because you have different schedule, and that includes your work, your time, and availability. But, thanks to my teammates, we shared our thoughts. As the saying goes, “three heads are better than one.”
With all our ideas gathered, our Asst1 became a success. Collaboration, helping one another, and cooperation result into a very good work. That is what principles and methods of assessment is all about. Sharing your learning experiences, your ideas, and exploring many things encourage us to do better, and improve our learning.
In assessment, the teachers have to think carefully what type of learning and tests that must be
provided to students. This is the effectve and productive ways to determine if the students are
actually learning. This will allow the students to think and how they are actively involved in the learning
process. In that, self-and-peer assessment comes in.
“Reflection is the key to self-assessment,”(University of Reading, 2017), as students require to reflect on their own learning.
They look up their own work, assess, and judge how they have performed to a specific tasks. Learners have to practice what
they have learned, and improved their performance. Evaluation should be considered, so that progress in students’ learning can
be monitored, as well as their skill development. Students’ have to think critically and identify gaps in understanding.
In peer-assessment, the students have to take responsibilty and handle their own learning. This will motivate students to assess themselves
and develop other assessment skills, thus, enhancing students’s knowledge and learning, through exchange of ideas. Peer-assessment
also allows teachers to design guidelines and rubrics, for the students to apply it effectively. The students will be able to assess
their peers, and benefit from peer feedback. Consructive criticism and comments on their work can carry out by the students.
Both self-and-peer assessment are beneficial because it give the students high quality learning, can enhance students’ learning, improve
their skills, and personal development. Students can be independent and confident about themselves, thus, reducing stress on their studies.
Teachers also can monitor and evaluate students’ work progress at a given time. They can also give feedback on the students’ performance.
This will also involve students in discussion, negotiation and developing assessment criteria, and make decision on their judgement.
I may say that assessing learning is a difficult task for the teachers to determine if the students have learned, and what kind of learning and knowledge
has to be provided to student learners.
Alignment of Assessment is an integral part in learning. It has many importance that make the students develop, monitor, and further their own learning. The students’ development and level of understanding are based on what they have learned in school. The teacher can make or break a student in the sense that they can either build or destroy based on evidences gathered.
There should be a learning target on the alignment of assessment. This is what the learners should know and can do. There should be a learning outcomes and student’s performance and achievement, abilities, and capabilities shows. The teacher has also a big role in student learning experience. With aligned assessment, there is quality learning, thus the teacher has concrete planning decisions, adjustment, evaluation, strategies, programs, and methods. Feedback given to students also determines their learning needs, and monitor academic progress. Students are also accountable and responsible for their own learning. Parents should also be involved in the assessment process, thus, education shared partnership. Teachers should communicate and with the parents the students’ progress and learning.
That is the importance of an aligned assessment in learning and in having a learning target.
